So I actually had a really good day (I got to dress up as Hermione and teach about Halloween!) and you'll hear more about it when I get up and do an official JET Blog post, probably once this weekend and all its Halloween and culture festivities are over, but this kind of killed the mood.

It's really stupid, but I was just perusing through the Target website (long story-- my mom was telling me how the local Target was really understocked and she's not sure if Target is struggling, or just the Elkhart branch, and I was taking inventory of the products I usually buy from them to see if anything's changed) to discover they no longer carry the Sunsilk brand, the rose-scented Hydra TLC line for dry hair which is my favorite hair products-- and part of my signature scent. Lisa said the smell reminds her of me (the first shower I took after I returned senior year after a semester of Japan, she was like, "Oh, Amy, I missed your smell!" or something, lol), Ugochi at KCJS always told me my hair smelled nice, and I actually left Robert my travel bottle of the conditioner when I visited him last year because the scent reminds him so much of me. And it goes without saying I like the smell; I wouldn't use the products if I didn't. These days I conserve the Sunsilk I brought with me from home (and, boy, now I'm really glad I have!), rotating it with locally-sold Herbal Essences Mermaid Moisture, but that's out of necessity; I would use only the Sunsilk products full-time if it were possible.

Of course merely *not carrying* the line isn't so bad, so I followed up with a search of Walmart.com and was pleased to see they still carry the line. However, the packaging has changed from the pink bottles (which were already a change from the original packaging from when I first starting using it freshman or sophomore year of college) to a more pretentious style that looks difficult to fit in a shower caddy with a massive "Co-Created With Teddy Charles" in script larger than the name of the line itself. Teddy Charles? Who the fuck is Teddy Charles? And why wasn't he mentioned before?

Oh. Because the Teddy Charles part is new. Because the line has been changed. Reading the Walmart reviews I quickly deduced that the line now smells like coconut, which is one of my least favorite smells for beauty products and doesn't do my natural pheromones any favors. (So there's really no point in me even trying it out). The two reviews I encountered were as follows:
I have been using SS for 2 years, and recently started having trouble getting this shampoo. I have tried several other shampoos since and just can not find one that does what SunSilk does. Back when I first got it it was in a pink bottle, called Sunsilk TLC, and that was prior to Teddy whats-his-face putting his two cents in. I actually liked the smell better then, but the product still is awesome and it still smells nice, just not great as it used to.

I'm giving this a good rating because this shampoo works well and leaves your hair shiny and soft. But I'm kinda disappointed because I liked the old version of Sunsilk MUCH better. When I bought this, I had no idea that it had changed so much. The smell is completely different (which is SO sad because half the reason I bought it was because I loved the smell). It has a coconut smell now. So if you're expecting the old Sunsilk, don't buy this. But if you like the smell of coconuts and you want to try the new version, then go for it - it works fine. :)

So at least the other costumers are also unhappy about the scent. Of course, the reviews on Walmart.com are scant and reviewing doesn't even seem to be possible on the official Sunsilk website. I may have to pull a Necco and write them a handwritten letter. Maybe even there is enough complaint this Teddy Charles person, if he's such a hair genius, can re-develop his honey and milk protein to smell like it's supposed to. Which was beautiful and delicious and flattered me perfectly.

I don't like it when my beloved products change. It leaves me in a very awkward position, because if I don't like the new formula I'm then stuck nomadically searching for a replacement, which costs time and money and can cause me to break out. Now, I am not a brand-loyalty type of person; I am not going to keep using a changed product just because I liked the old one. I only show a company loyalty because I consistently like a company's products, which generally necessitates that the products don't change from the way I like them. From what I can tell, others were using the products because they liked them the way they were, too. I always had trouble finding the Hydra TLC 24/7 creme leave-in conditioner stocked because even people using other shampoos and conditioners loved it so much as a leave-in conditioner. And while it worked very well (another reason why I'm pissed-- it wasn't broke, why'd they try to *fix* it?), one of the key selling points I ever heard fellow users rave about was the scent.

So, Sunsilk, you'll be getting a letter soon. And until the scent is reinstated, I will not be requesting anyone send me your products from home, nor purchasing them when I return.

*adds to your last line* Unless, of course, someone finds some pre-Teddy bottles still hanging around. (I have to go to Walmart today and I'll see if maybe there are some left.)

I agree! I loathe it when products change! Whether it's the flavor of a food, smell of a shampoo (damn you, Sunsilk!) or even a band who's gone to shit (here's lookin at you, Weezer) awww man it gets me irritable!

Don't worry baby, I feel like enough people will be complaining like the case with the Sweethearts candies. I don't see the logic of them turning what I find to be a verrry unique smell into something bland and disgusting as coconut.

CHANGE IS BAD! )-: (Wasn't that Hershey's motto for a while?). Hang on to my travel-sized conditioner baby. I probably won't use but now I'll want to sniff it for nostalgia's sake. I guess Sunsilk will be forever frozen in time as *my college shampoo,* rather than my signature scent. Alas )-:

They'll only change it if it cuts down on sales. Unfortunately, this new Teddy Buttface angle has coincided with an aggressive ad campaign, and my searching indicates lots of beauty bloggers reviewing the new Hydra TLC like it's a new product no one's tried before. And since it is a good product formula-wise, people are going to keep using it, and never be any the wiser it was better with the old scent.

I'm writing them an ultimatum anyhow, and I will stand my ground on the repurchasing. The new formula won't appeal to me, so I have no reason to purchase it again anyway.
