Writer's Block: Life with Technology

Skype is the reason I am not insane from loneliness. I don't even want to imagine how my relationships with friends, family, and my boyfriend back home would be affected by having only letters or the occasional costly phone call. Email, AIM, Facebook, and Livejournal get similar pats on the back, though Skype is #1. Actually, the Internet in general gets a huge pat on the back. I've met people I never would have met through the Internet. I've learned things I never would have learned. I really don't understand all the bitching about how the Internet is the death of society. There are downsides, but I find the benefits far overwhelm them.
I can probably credit my survival, or at least my medical well-being, to technology as well, and that's important. I was incubated and fed on IVs after my birth; would sticking me in the oven a la pioneer days have worked so well? My appendix was removed with use of a camera-- and I have minimal scarring. (Less scarring that I would have if my appendix hadn't burst!). Other operations on my tonsils and teeth have improved my quality of life by eliminating chronic tonsilitis and keeping my mouth from becoming painfully overcrowded with too many teeth. I also have never had smallpox, measles, mumps, diphtheria, or HPV thanks to vaccines.
I would also like to extend honors to electricity, indoor plumbing, hot running water, and central air, even if Japan chooses not to use the central air. (You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone *sniff*).
