QUAKER POPCORN-FLAVORED RICE CAKES.

These are my go-to snack and they have been for years (since at least early elementary school). I eat them after I eat dessert, they are so good. And at something like 15 calories a pop, I could eat a sleeve a day and not make a dent in my weight. I also am a fan of popcorn regular popcorn, which I like in any form-- lightly salted, slathered in butter, sprinkled in cheese, or kettlecorn (the only thing I'm not a big fan of is caramel corn)-- but there's something about the popcorn cakes that are extra special. I don't need movies as an excuse to eat popcorn, but I'll take it. (Though actually at the theater I seldom buy snacks).

Unfortunately, popcorn cakes aren't sold in Japan, so now my most frequent snack is Obaachan no Potapotayaki. It's pretty darn good, a mix of salty and sweet on a rice cracker. They do rice cakes differently here; the rice is ground up, not puffed, but I still like it. Japan is a good place for salty snacks in general, though; there are dried persimmon seeds and all manner of rice cake-based snacks with various seasonings.

However, Japan (at least where I am) does not have great chip selection (light salt, Kyuushuu salt-- what's the difference?-- seaweed salt, pepper, consomme, shrimp, spicy/kimchi, and *gag* Hokkaido butter, which made me almost barf), and after popcorn cakes chips are my favorite-- especially tortilla chips. I like potato chips with French onion dip, or the flavored Lays with cheese or BBQ, but nothing beats some Tostitos and salsa or guacamole, or Doritos. I have never met a flavor of Dorito I didn't like. (Though, sadly, one of my favorites-- the Hot Wings and Blue Cheese Collisions flavor-- everyone else didn't like and it got discontinued )-:).

I am definitely more of a salty snack person than a sweets person. I like cookies, cakes, and candy plenty, but when given the choice I usually go for the chips or popcorn, and I can binge larger quantity of salty foods than sweet. (I once gave up eating entire bags of Doritos for Lent, because it was becoming an after-school habit my freshman year of college O.o).

My tastes really haven't changed at all since childhood. Tiffany still teases me about how I used to binge on all the snack food in her house when I was in middle and high school (hey, not my fault my mom refused to buy my own for me!), and chip breaks at the lake during the summer were always a great (and why summertime only? Why?) treat. My grama says I inherited her love of salty foods from her (she, like me, is another of the few females who prefers the salty snacks to sweet), and my mom says she just trained me as a child by telling me unsalted saltines were cookies, so I associate salt with desserts instead of sugar.

Argghhh, now I want some chips!

Ahh, I am so jealous! My mom sent me a sleeve of rice cakes in my Valentine's Day package and they are already gone. I miss them so much!

Though I do still have Japanese rice cakes, which are also amazing but not the same thing.
