tabular_rasa: (WTF?)

New Facebook

So Facebook has this new design coming out. I don't know when they plan to implement it, but if you go to new.facebook.com, you can see what life will be like with it.

The first impression, the NewsFeed, is fine. Clean layout, stuff just moved around a little. I can work with that.

On to Profile. AW HELL NO.

The Wall and the MiniFeed are COMBINED. WTF??? As if that's not enough, this bastard combination is the main page of the profile. Since when is the MiniFeed the most important part of Facebook? (Until they stopped letting me, I kept it permanently minimized). It didn't even exist for years of Facebook-- and don't they remember when everyone hated it? Now I have to wade through a lot of random non-events of my own creation just to read what people have written for me?

Furthermore, why isn't Info our default page? Does that make too much sense or something?

The Applications have been particularly screwed. I know there are a lot of people who hate Applications, and I'm all for a more discreet presentation-- like requiring them to be below default things like Info/Wall/Pictures-- but I think they may have actually gone too far. Some people do like them, after all-- I mean, the viral explosion of them is proof of that. A few Applications can appear as blurry little sidenotes in the margins of the default page, but the rest are relegated to a little optional Applications tab, which obviously no one is going to look at, ever. The meme quality of Applications is over as of this change. Maybe a few people are cheering, but I kind of liked having Mochi on display for a few sympathy pats on the way down to my Wall-- and I used to pick Applications I wanted based on the interesting-seeming ones off my friends' pages. Now, no one's going to see anyone's without specifically seeking them out. (And who pulls up someone else's Flair or Bumper Stickers just to see them, when they're not displayed? I'll tell you: No one, that's who).

Perhaps my biggest pet peeve with the new system, because it is most obviously fixable and obviously in need of fixing, is the order of my photographs in Photos. When I pull up Photos, it shows me the first photos ever posted-- you know, back in the summer before freshman year. Considering Facebook has been around a while, and we expect it to continue to grow, it seems foolish to have the first photos that pop up always be those same first few moments of a frizzier-haired, slightly heavier me next to friends practically unrecognizable to their present selves or people I haven't spoken to in as many as three years. Where are my recent, relevant pictures?

I'm sure there's probably more, but I haven't uncovered it yet. I already sent feedback to Facebook about it, but received the majorly unencouraging "Thank you for your feedback. We will consider it for our future products" reply. *Sigh.* Why can't they leave it alone? If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Edit (12:49 am): Oh my God. My voice matters. (Or our voices matter). Facebook fixed the photo problem. They're going in reverse now. WHOA. I am seriously floored.

Everyone always reacts so badly to the changes on Facebook, you'd think they would have learned! (But, then again, people do keep using it after they do change it, lol). I'm proud of them for at least letting us beta-test it this time around-- as long as they actually do apply our requested changes.

If they keep the Wall/MiniFeed combined like that, I'm probably just going to private all the things that can show up on my MiniFeed besides Wall posts, lol. I guess it's safer in regards to privacy, anyway /-:

Facebook's changed from the low-powered network dealy I was peer-pressured into back in my early college days. I'm glad they haven't stopped listening to the voices of their users since going big-time even though I probably would've quit anyway if I wasn't shamefully exiled from West Lafayette.

I honestly can't stand anything about the new facebook. I HATE that they mix the mini feed and wall together and I really don't get why the info isn't the first page. I like facebook the way it is, why are they changing it and so drastically? I do have to give them props though for changing the photos after you asked.

Yeah, I don't understand why it needs to change. People are going to bitch more about the changes than the combined bitching that is presently on the site.

I probably wasn't the only one :-P but regardless, I'm glad the feedback seems to matter. Maybe if everyone gives them a negative reaction to the MiniFeed/Wall thing, they'll change that, too?
