A Deep Thought and A Weird Observation
Aug. 3rd, 2006 10:14 pmA Deep Thought (though more relevant for those in the Christian tradition):
Could you sell your soul to the devil in exchange for the salvation of all mankind?
I mean, "learning to play dis here guitar real good" is hardly worth it (ten points if you guess the cinematic reference)-- but wouldn't the salvation of everyone else, except yourself, be? This way, even through your suffering, you would know it was worth it-- I mean, all of humankind! Besides-- wouldn't God reward you? Maybe this is pushing it, but eternal debt to pay in Hell seems a greater sacrifice than Jesus's crucifixion, even-- and for the same (supposed) result.
(Then again, I suppose the devil wouldn't keep the deal. He's a shifty type, so I've heard . . . )
A Weird Observation (with SPOILERS for the Pirates movie, so, yeah, just warning you . . . ):
The Kraken in Pirates of the Caribbean is a ginormous Vagina Dentata. Symbolism for the theme of manipulative, cruel women, much? I mean, all women do in that movie is screw people over . . . making them cut their own hearts out, chaining them to doomed ships, trying to hit on them in exchange for shifty divination . . . Yeah, I think it was symbolic. I think it also recalled Star Wars. I swear, Will and Elizabeth are related, lol . . .

^_^
I always kinda thought that you never could really sell your soul to the devil because it wasn't yours to sell. Your soul (at least as long as you've been baptized) belongs to God supposedly. I sort of figured that when you 'sold your soul to the devil' your soul wasn't really gone, but because you suffered from the guilt and torment that comes with realizing you'd be willing to sell your soul for a material thing the soul would become twisted and dark and then God wouldn't want it and you would go to hell.
Oddly enough, that bit of morbid musing was brought on after I watched the movie Bedazzled the first time. :P weird, yes?

Date: 2006-08-05 03:16 am (UTC)God would not reward you for siding with the other side, even if your intentions were good. you have no need to sacrifice yourself for the good of mankind because Jesus has already done it. He has put all of our sins on His head and all that.
A greater sacrifice? He was separated from God... A part of Him... His father and life-giver... He was a willing sacrifice that could have come down from that cross at any time. No, i dont think more suffering would come close...
*is tired* yeah i'm a bit tired so i appologize if that dosnt make sence...

Well, as I think you've seen before, I'm pretty Aryan and tend to get rather humanizing with Jesus (and I always get confused with the relationship of God and Jesus; it seems each church has a different take; father/son, one being, both father/son and one being . . . I've got a headache . . . )-- but I think I get what you're saying.
At any rate, you're right, it's certainly not the most plausible action in the world, but I just like the moral conundrum-- it's like trying to trick the devil; it would make more of an interesting story than a logical action-- like, a pre-Jesus one, or something, or as part of a different religious tradition . . . Mostly, though, I think it's a good question to ask: Would you (sort of like Jesus), be willing to suffer in Hell eternally, if it achieved the salvation of humanity (if Jesus hadn't already gotten to it, or something repeated The Fall and damned us all, again, etc)?
