I prefer to live in a region with four seasons PROVIDED my home and workplace have adequate climate control. I'm a bit of a weather geek and I think I would get bored in a place where the weather is always the same. However, it's not about the temperature so much as the diverse weather events like a mix of sunny and cloudy days, rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes and/or hurricanes/typhoons/cyclones, and snow. Of course, temperature can be an *event* when there is a heat wave, drought, early freeze, or blizzard, and those are all interesting to me (especially when they cancel school!)-- but the point is the excitement and novelty of diverse weather, especially severe weather. For example, I could be satisfied living in Florida, because while it seldom snows there is the possibility of both tornadoes and hurricanes.

But the climate control is imperative. I think the "Good fences make good neighbors" quote applies just as well to weather as it does to people, and I can't stand living in a country where the shelter available defies my very definition of shelter, which is protection from the outside elements. I never used to hate winter as much as I do after spending two seasons with it inside my house. Winter is lovely when I can get all rosy and chapped from the blowing snow and then strip off my layers to the soothing warmth of the indoors, but it's just a fucking bitch when I have to keep on coat or even put on another layer (since I'm not in the sun and all) to be comfortable in my own living room. A rainy day is all fine and good when I can take refuge after a downpour in a dry house, rather than waking in clammy sheets and unable to find a scrap of clothing in my drawers that doesn't feel cold and vaguely moist. If I were to live in Japan permanently, I would probably have to build a custom home in order to not shoot myself in the face, and I would have to reconsider my career in education because I could not stand working in the conditions I do for the rest of my life. The only place the typical Japanese home and school makes sense is someplace that is perpetually dry and 73F/23C, but Japan is notoriously proud of their four seasons. So proud, in fact, it is necessary to make everyone aware of them every single moment of every single day by providing no sheltering relief from them.

The irony is that when I move to LA, my Japanese apartment would be adequate-- but I will have heat! But damn, the first (and probably only) day of the year it slips below 50F, I am cranking that motherfucker and running around naked and it will be great.
