My Work Here Is Done
Jun. 17th, 2010 08:39 pmToday when I was walking to the ferry to leave Ooshima, I ran into three of my students in the combined first- and second-grade class. They started asking me about their favorite TV shows and whether they have them in the US. There were a couple I hadn't heard of, but I told them that Detective Conan, Pokemon, Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto are all fairly (to inordinately) popular. They also showed me a deck of Duel Masters cards, which seems to be yet another manga turned TV show turned card game of the likes of Pokemon, Digimon, and Yugioh; I said that while it had been a while since I had hung out with elementary school kids, I was sure there were elementary-schoolers in the US that played it (even girls, I assured the girl of the group, who was quite concerned).
After the litany of "Do you have X in the US?" "Do you have Y in the US?" one of the boys finally just rolled his eyes in frustration: "Is there anything different between Japan and the US?" he moaned.
"I think it's nighttime there now," said the girl. "And it's afternoon here."
Quite profound, really. There's really not that much different between us besides some different circumstances. But you like Naruto, we like Naruto. Let's all be friends.
In other news, I've got lots and lots to update from Tory's visit, but as usual it will take some time for me to get the pictures on photobucket and the entry typed up. Look out for it.
