I got my book last night at about 9:30 pm, and have practically been reading ever since. I am now about ¾ of the way done-- and I have to do my halfway-(or, well, at least, *partway*)-- through inventory of how it’s going, what theories I was right about, what theories have changed, and how I think the world will end! O.o . . .
OMG I am really digging this book. It’s like a great party of wizarding love and fun—though also like a sad swan song, a goodbye revisit to all those things we’ve read about and loved before (and a way to twine together all those loose ends, and lend relevance to those seemingly—but never truly so—details of J.K. Rowling’s imagination). I’m not sure how it’s going to end—and all those poems consoling us about the death in the beginning are NOT giving me much optimism. On the other hand, I feel almost as if they’re beating us so much over the head with the idea of Harry’s death (even he himself thinks—and truly believes, even?—that he’s going to die! O.o) that she almost can’t kill him off!
At any rate, I might as well get in my happy spazzes before it possibly turns for the worse . . . (This is all relatively in order; I wrote these things down :-P)
First, I would like to say that once upon a time, Hideko and Akiko (me) started a fanfiction about Dumbledore. (This was at camp in our minimal spare time; we wanted to give him a backstory—mostly explaining why he believes so much in the power of love—so we gave him a lover to lose and were going to write about his school years.) Then J.K. Rowling published the book. The end. (We had our own theory about why Dumbledore’s nose was broken . . . and when I suggested Grindlewald and Dumbledore were friends or rivals at school, we figured it couldn’t be possible as Grindlewald would have gone to school at Durmstrang or some German equivalent, lol . . . ). Yeah . . . Dumbledore backstory like WHOA. I figure we need to know; I’m glad we are (shoot, that was why I wanted to write the fanfiction! Lol . . . ). It’s so much darker than I expected, but Harry needs to give Dumbledore a freaking break; people change, sheesh. I still love him (but I do give a nod to Alice who thought he was evil in the 5th book, lol . . . ).
I feel like I have this very vivid image of the actor who plays Dumbledore saying “Ariana.” I’m not sure when or whether this even ever happened, in the movies or otherwise, but I do have this weird feeling of déjà vu surrounding Ariana’s name in relation to Dumbledore. Sad story, that one. (What in freaking hell did those kids do to her to screw her up so bad? Like freaking rape her? Wasn’t she like, seven?).
We visit the Malfoy Manor! They have peacocks! LOL it so fits!
Aww Hedwig. Just when I start to love OWL BABIES. Actually, I thought she was possibly already dead the whole time Harry was worried she was ignoring him—I was happily surprised that she was alive and then prompted lead straight back again to her death )-: Could this loss of one bird mean the gain of another—Fawkes, perhaps?
Mad-Eye I was never too attached to, but I feel I should acknowledge his death. We spent most of our time in his company when it wasn’t really him—I always feel rather weird about that, lol . . .
WE MEET ANDROMEDA ZOMG I HAD A SPAZZ FIT. I’m so happy, because she’s just how I pictured—brown hair, looks like her sisters but, well, nicer-looking, even. Since she’s nearly identical to Bellatrix, I can be BOTH OF THEM! MUHAHAHAHAHA!!! Ted, however—a little weird. Didn’t picture him blonde, but I can work with it; didn’t picture him pudgy, but I guess he didn’t always have to be, he could with age . . . it’s sort of cute, makes him a homey family type, lol . . . BUT THEN HE DIED! )-: We never found out if he was the newsreader (or is that still to come? Lol . . . ).
Regulus was totally R.A.B. Who didn’t call it? Lol . . . I really liked seeing Sirius’s room, and Regulus’s . . . They got through that theory really fast, since everyone knew what was going down, lol . . . It only took like a chapter . . . But I loved the inundation of information about him—he was just as I hoped. (I can finish my Wicked parody, lol . . . I can also change the ending to my Regulus fanfiction without much changes to anything previously in it!).
I am also fond of the House Elf “I HAD to do it,” thing. I feel like that would be a great romantic line (I love you so much, I just HAD to do X, there was no question) if it didn’t, well, involve House Elves. Perhaps I’ll have Andromeda in my RP be cheesy about it and use it :-P
Remus Lupin kind of pissed me off in the beginning, until we got an explanation as to why. I about cried when he and Harry had their conflict. Remus having trouble trusting himself to be a worthy father was tragically insecure, but, well, totally Remus (and for some reason his fear of having a werewolf baby reminded me of Kenzaburo Oe’s “A Personal Matter,” for which I’m not really that sure why, since they’re not really all that similar . . . anyway . . . ). I’m glad he doesn’t hold grudges.
BUT THEN THE BABY OMG I WANT ONE. First off, it’s a cross between Remus and half of Andromeda, which is wonderful (Remus is a dad! Andromeda is a grama! Aww!) and it’s a werewolf baby in theory ZOMG so cute—as well as a Metamorphagus! (I have this great vision of a werewolf turning purple, lol . . . ). AND THEY NAMED HIM TEDDY REMUS. AFTER TED. AND REMUS. OMG. I have a new favorite character, lol . . .
I’m fond of the “choose what to believe” thing people keep telling Harry, even if he doesn’t. I’m impressed with how he’s grown; he doesn’t have capslock!rage anymore, and he doesn’t always need to *act,* and he has a greater sense of subtlety. Woot! Also Ron faced his inner demons; yea. I was afraid for a second he’d go evil.
Hermione’s bag reminds me of Mary Poppins.
Hermione is an S and Harry is an N. I can find a passage, lol . . .
Lily’s and James’s graves also almost made me cry—particularly when Harry was crying. I knew we were going to go there, and we did ^_^ It was nice.
I like all the details we’re getting, like peoples’ Patronuses, Lily’s and James’s birthdays, Bellatrix’s and Draco’s wand types, that Regulus was a Seeker, etc . . .
The nicknames on the radio show were ridiculous; I called “Royal” and “Romulus” before even Harry and Hermione, lol . . .
Great quote: “Wands are only as powerful as the wizards who use them. Some wizards just like to boast that theirs are bigger and better than other people’s.” Hermione to Ron. Notice how we’re talking about wizards, here—and only wizards, not witches . . . lol . . .
I think Peter got the shaft on his death. I think she may be the very thing she was referring to when she said she regretting writing in certain details; I think at the time of Book 3 he was going to figure in much more greatly but she ended up not really needing his life-debt owe to Harry, so she just gave him a random situation to use it up and owe Harry in. As for the “guilt” and “mercy” they speak of in regards to him—I guess I am playing him just right in my RP ^_^
Oh Dobby. )-: I have no problem with you being dead in the story, but, still, that’s sad. I almost cried, again.
Yea Ravenclaw common room! Now onto the Hufflepuffs, please! Lol . . . though it really is high time Ravenclaw got her due. Is it just me, or is Ravenclaw’s lost diadem totally the tiara Fleur borrowed at the wedding? That’s totally J.K.R-poi, mentioning it all the time because it’s important . . .
The last thing that just happened? Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na Bat-Snape! (Who we have not seen enough of just yet and I still have faith in, even if perhaps not J.K. Rowling, lol . . . ).
See you on the other side of finishing the book!
