Decemberists Concert

Tonight, Henry, Keith, Patricia, and I went to see The Decemberists at the Pageant theater on the Loop. It was so great!

We were running late (as predicted, Keith's printer did not work as Henry went to print out the online tickets last-minute O.o), but we got to the theater by the start time at 8:00. We couldn't get seats at the little tables or any of the benches or stolls, so we just sort of had to linger along the edge of the underage section, careful to mind the lines of the walkway or the guy would come over and bother us to get back in, lol . . .

The opening group was called "My Brightest Diamond." The lead's voice was amazing . . . I just Wikipedia-ed her and it says she has classical training, which makes a lot of sense; big range and a lot of fun stuff to work with with her voice. I wish I could sing like that.

As for the Decemberists, I was so happy as they played practically all of my favorites! They started off with "The Tain," which I really don't know that well, but then they played a lot from The Crane Wife-- "The Crane Wife 3," "Yankee Bayonet" (which the singer from "My Brightest Diamond" came out to sing the girl part for), "O Valencia!" (I wonder if Valencia from second grade is happy that there's a song with her name in it, lol, as it's rather unusual), and "The Island." They also played "Clementine" at some point in there.

They closed with "Sons and Daughters." Colin got semi-political about the "here all the bombs fade away" part, saying to think of it a a bit of comfort in a world where bombings go on and no one knows anything about what's going on or what's safe, etc . . . The audience was receptive, though, and it wasn't overtly "RARRR," lol . . .

An encore was pretty much inevitable. At first, everyone went off, and people started calling for an encore, including very pointedly from a few audience members in unison: "MARINER'S REVENGE!!!" At first, just Colin came out and sang "Your Red Right Ankle." Then everyone came back out, and they're like, "Yeah, we heard you, and we didn't want to disappoint!" and begin to play the opening strains of "The Mariner's Revenge Song"-- the song I got introduced to them through, and a fan favorite ^_^

Ahh . . . ha ha ha whale . . .

At any rate, I'm really tired and need to get to bed since I have a ton of stuff tomorrow. That wasn't much detail, but I just wanted to spazz about it really quick, lol . . .
