For those of you who are just seeing the news, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan was (once again) on the opposite side of the country from me. I'm okay-- I didn't even feel a thing-- and I'm one of the few prefectures not under a tsunami warning, because I'm facing the Japan Sea rather than the Pacific, with the whole of Kyuushuu as sort of a buffer.

The damage is pretty intense up north though, with some damage in Tokyo as well. The news has lots of footage from Sendai, whose airport was completely drowned out by a tsunami wave, as well as burning oil tanks in Chiba prefecture. And there are still tsunami warnings out, not only in Japan but South America, southeast Asia, and Hawaii and the US west coast.

I've heard from most people I know who were in Tokyo and northwards when it happened and though one couple's Tokyo Disney vacation has gotten pretty interesting (though apparently the park is doing a really good job of handling the situation) and another is celebrating his birthday with broken plates and glasses all over his apartment /-: But I'm still waiting on word from the Akiokas-- but as they are in southerly, landlocked Kyoto they should be fine (though I worry about Reiko's sisters, at least one of whom is in Tokyo)-- and [livejournal.com profile] defined, who I have a bit more reason to worry for since I believe she's fairly near the Fukushima coast, quite near the center of the action ): Edit (9:46 pm): She's okay! Though I imagine quite shaken /-:
Edit (12:00 am): I just heard from the Akiokas, who in turn have heard from the sister in Tokyo. All parties accounted for, I'm going to bed!

A Yamaguchi ALT who recently lost a friend in the Christchurch quake posted on his Facebook today, "I am fucking sick of earthquakes! Just fuck off!" Hear hear /-: I feel like all these earthquakes in succession are related, like the plate shifts and other parts of it shake so that everything balances out into equilibrium again. Between Chile, NZ, and Japan I'm kind of worried the West Coast is due for something. What do you reckon it hits as soon as I get there?
