Anything still alive, such as in ikizukuri. I will not put it in my mouth while it is still squirming around and can sense its cruel death by incisor, no matter how much of a delicacy it is claimed to be. I'm glad I have never had to face ikizukuri in my time in Japan, because it would be a very awkward situation as I try to decide whether it's more important to not offend anyone or not feel like a murderer. (And I already sort of squint sideways at how many Japanese restaurants expect me to do all the actual work myself*-- so if you can't even kill the thing for me, shouldn't you be paying me? :-P).

*If you go out for shabu-shabu, yakiniku, other places serving hot-pot dishes, and some okonomiyaki establishments, expect to do your own cooking, lol. The hilarious part about shabu-shabu in particularly is that if I went out for shabu-shabu, I would cook it myself at the table and pay maybe Y3000-Y5000 (or more) per person. If I made shabu-shabu at home, I would cook it myself and spend maybe Y1000 for myself, plus an addition Y500 or so per person. Why anyone ever goes out for shabu-shabu is beyond me, lol.

Mostly though it's just my aversion to killing something myself. I do eat things which have been killed by others, but I have never done it myself and I would be very uncomfortable doing so. (I don't even like ordering certain death upon animals I have met while they were still living, like choosing a lobster from a tank). If I were desperate and starving I'm sure I could kill something if it were the only available source of food, but in that case I would implicate a gun, a bow and arrow, or my bare hands; I'm not going to kill it with my mouth.

Though I have to say WTF and Boo! at the responses to this prompt that say things like "Japanese food" and "Chinese food." Just because a given cuisine has some culinary extremes doesn't mean there aren't harmless dishes, too. I mean, what on earth is scary about fried rice or ramen?
