Of course my real answer is both-- stay at the resort but take day trips to sightsee, visit museums, eat local food, etc, after which I can unwind with a dip in the sea and a massage-- but if I have to pick one I'd go with learning about culture and people. Generally I travel with the specific purpose to go somewhere new and see and experience new things. There's something to be said for having a purely relaxing vacation, but so much about travel is stressful anyway I might as well go the whole nine yards and get some enriching experiences from it. Plus that's the way my family has always vacationed, getting up earlier and getting more exercise than we would on a regular day!
