Christmas is the one time of year I actually want it to be cold and snowing. Normally I hate cold weather (my lj readers know this well :-P), but I do like the festiveness and nostalgia of a white Christmas. I grew up in northern Indiana and got a white Christmas about 70% of the time (check out South Bend), so it just doesn't feel like Christmas without rosy cheeks, winter coats, and lights reflected in the snow.

Unfortunately, if you live in a place cold enough for there to be snow regularly on Christmas, then winter lasts much longer on the other end, too-- you might get a snowy St. Patrick's Day and a chilly Easter-- and January and February are then hellaciously cold since December is only the beginning of winter. (Personally, I would be in favor of moving Christmas to January 25th; it would give more people a chance for a white Christmas and more of the yuckiness of winter would be spent building up to Christmas-- rather than three months of nothing after a big hurrah three days in). So I would prefer not to live permanently in a place that regularly gets a white Christmas.

My ideal situation would be to live somewhere southerly but go to Indiana to visit my family for Christmas each year. I can have my nostalgic snowy white Christmas but return home to spend the rest of January and February in only minor cool (or, dare I say, warmth!). I want a white Christmas-- but a tropical New Year!
